My Upcycled Craft Room – The Room Swap

This past weekend was of course Easter weekend; which means some time off, to relax and chill in the craft room… right?

My upcycled craft room

Aside from some family time, the long weekend meant we had the time to do something we’ve been discussing for a while!

The Craft Room

Here on the blog, though I have of course talked about crafts, I haven’t talked much about my crafting space yet. aside from having a craft room (the name of the blog is a bit of a giveaway!) I like to call it my Upcycled Craft Room; because we made my desk from some small drawer units and some wood; and a lot of my craft supplies are in two painted cupboards, from when Stu was little! I also use a lot of plastic drawers, and some repurposed cabinets as shelving!

My goal long-term is to do more upcycling and repurposing to make this a fun but useful space, without spending lots on storage! But that is for another time!

The Room Swap

For a while now Stu and I have talked about trading rooms across the hall, between the bigger spare room, which is mostly storage and where Stu keeps his guitar stuff; and my craft room which is the small box room.

We finally did a trade! We made a mistake when we moved in over two years ago, of having the room with all the amps and speakers on the inside wall. My craft room was on the outside wall. This was not especially practical when it comes to noise.

Boxed up

We started boxing up some things on Thursday evening after work, and on Friday we did the main bulk of the room-swap. Playing a little bit of furniture tetris; between us we managed to shift the shelving and cupboards; followed by my desk, as well as all my crafty stash; and all of Stu’s music stuff. We got mostly sorted. I did share on my Instagram stories at the time, but I thought I’d write a blog post and share a couple of photos.

Craft Room, Colour and Fun!

One thing I really like, is how colourful the space is! Though I have plans to redecorate the furniture at some point, I really want it to be a bright space.

Whenever I see pictures and articles on craft rooms, they are so white. I find this a bit too clinical personally. I like the cosiness of all the mish-mash of colours and textures, and I find the wood tones far more comfortable and warming.

Clock still to go, but everything else is done!

I’ll also never manage to hide the film-fan in me, as you’ll notice several movie references in the room, though I have omitted my Bride of Chucky, Chucky and Tiffany dolls from the photos for this post (they usually sit on my rocking chair).

Where is everything?

The other thing here, unlike a lot of craft rooms I’ve seen online, is that very little is on display, this is because (presumably unlike many published crafters at least) although this is a working space, and extremely storage happy, I have two cats, one of which (Loki), is especially inquisitive, and has a liking for pens, and basically any other small thing he can play with! The place would be trashed the first day I left it to go to work. I’d spend all my free time gathering and tidying, as opposed to making and crafting! (Sid is pretty relaxed, though I do occasionally find him curled up on my desk.)

Craft Room Desk

So, a whole new room! I do have some plans for what I’m going to do with the space, but you’ll just have to keep visiting to find out what!

Do you have a craft room? Or a dream creating space? Let me know in the comments.
