It’s no secret I love an excuse to bake; and for Valentines what else could I make but red velvet cake?
Red velvet cake is actually not that difficult to make, and add cream cheese frosting and you’ve got something truly special for any event!
Red Velvet Cake
Ah nothing says valentines than red or pink right? I went all out, because I have a heart shaped silicone cupcake mould, and made these cute valentines cupcakes. You could choose to make one large cake, or just standard cupcakes! It’s easy to find edible cake decorations in most baking aisles nowadays.
This will make a standard 7″ cake or 12 cupcakes.
- 200g self raising flour
- 1/2 tsp baking soda
- 1 Tbsp cocoa powder
- 50g butter
- 150g caster sugar
- 100ml vegetable oil
- 2 eggs
- 1tsp vanilla extract
- red food colouring (mix should look bright red, will darken on cooking)
- 100ml buttermilk
How cute are these cupcakes?! I added food colouring to make the cream cheese frosting pink, you can of course leave it white! I then added cute edible heart decorations to finish for a Valentines feel.

Pink Cream Cheese Frosting
- 200g cream cheese
- 100g butter
- 350g icing sugar
- 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
- red food colouring to make it pink
I find this frosting really sweet, so tend to only layer it on thinly, though of course this is up to you! The sponge itself, is soft and tasty, it’s definitely a lot simpler than people often think!
