There’s something super cute about all the little gonks around at Christmas! I adore the little gnomes, and wanted to have a go at making some easy handmade gonks of my own.
I wanted to make something a little different, and keep it as simple and easy as possible! These are so versatile, and of course could very easily be altered to create a whole host of festive characters!
What are Gonks?
Inspired by Nordic imps, these little gnomes, or gonks; are super cute, very on trend Scandi decorations. They’re available almost everywhere, and in a range of styles, with different levels of detail.
What I Used:
- Felt sheets
- Cotton wool pads
- Christmas bauble
I wanted to try and keep it simple making my own little guys, and so I started with some felt cones. The felt I had in my stash is fairly stiff and I didn’t need to use anything else. If you have thinner, less rigid fabric, you could easily start with some card, and then wrap that in the felt to begin with.
I filled my hat with wadded cotton, and a christmas bauble, just to give me something to glue onto, in the case of the larger 2. The small one, I just filled with cotton. I then fluffed up the cotton pad to make a beard. gluing it under the edge of the hat on both sides with a little pulled down in the middle.

I then made some bodies; making different sized bodies to go with my different sized hats, My aim was to be able to snugly fit the hat over the tube. Rolling cardstock into a tube shape, I changed the heights as well as the width of the tube to make each gnome unique. I then covered this in felt, adding a little pom-pom nose.
Some ric-rac trim around the hats added a little extra detail. I was quite tempted to add some little felt “feet” to the bottoms of the tube, but I decided they looked fine as they are.
This trio were so quick and easy to make, and a great quick Christmas craft idea! What do you think?
